Site is not just a plot of land to build on. It is to be defined, explored and engaged. Understanding the earth, a retaining wall and an existing house from 1966 as the site altogether, we actively reshaped and surgically operated on it for this gallery extension.
When PKM Gallery, one of the most respected private galleries in Korea, purchased a plot of land with a spectacular view of Seoul for its new space, the lot was separated from the main road by an eight meter high retaining wall. A small opening on the retaining wall led to an underground garage and a stairway that connected the road to the existing house. Taking advantage of this unique ground condition, we dug under the existing house to add an underground extension to the building for main gallery spaces and renovated the existing house to use as VIP lounge.
This approach had multiple advantages compared to demolition and new construction: 1) It allows for maximum volumer for the gallery spaces, with six-meter ceiling height, as they are placed underground; 2) We were able to establish direct access to the gallery space from the main road while separating the access to the VIP lounge, which is formed from the back of the site on the raised ground (Part of the existing house was cut out to insert an elevator to establish circulation between the gallery space and the VIP lounge); 3) Actual area of new construction was minimized which led to dramatic reduction of parking requirements. Most visitors walk in and on exhibition opening nights valet service is provided. If a building of the same area had been constructed anew, the whole first floor would have been used for parking.
