Mobility Energy and Food Energy
Food energy is essential to human and transportation accounts for 13% of all energy related to food system in the US[1]. In South Korea, the food mileage, average distance food is transported from the time of its production to its consumer, is 7,085 ton*km per person[2]. If food were to be produced locally, the consumption of mobility energy can be greatly reduced due to the shortened travel distance.
Public Control
Society often intervenes in the public use of dangerous substances or limited resources, through means like legal restrictions or taxation. Energy belongs to both of these categories. Abuse can lead to catastrophe of global magnitude and there are already signs of shortages like occasional spikes in oil price, black outs in New York, or constant power shortage alerts in Seoul.
SEDP (Separation of Energy Dispensing and Prescribing)
We imagine a new social system to dispense mobility energy, not too different from how SDP (Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing) works in the pharmaceutical industry. An individual is diagnosed on one’s mobility energy use pattern at a certified Energy Clinic and is issued a prescription for appropriate amount. The individual can fill one’s prescription at a near by Energy Farmacy.
Energy Farmacy
We reimagine the gas stations, ubiquitous urban infrastructure with underground tanks, open ground space and a canopy, with our design of Energy Farmacies. The canopy hosts farms for energy production, both mobility energy (electricity) and food energy. Ground space becomes a place for exchange of energy including a market and electric car charge pods for both personal and shared cars. Underground tanks are remediated and used as urban aqua farm. Various forms of participation in the energy farm, aqua farm or purchasing of grown-in-place food in the market allow for extra prescription or coupons for shared car minutes.
